Reproductive biology of Davilla kunthii A. St-Hil. (Dilleniaceae) in Central Amazonia Acta Botanica
Rech,André Rodrigo; Manente-Balestieri,Fatima Cristina de Lazari; Absy,Maria Lúcia.
This survey aimed at describing the interactions of floral visitors and Davilla kunthii A. St.-Hil. as well as characteristics of its reproductive biology in Itacoatiara, state of Amazonas, Brazil. Tests of the breeding system were performed. The guild of visitors was described according to richness, abundance, relative frequency and constancy. The breeding system tests indicated that D. kunthii is self-compatible. The pollination system was characterized as generalist, with 39 visitor species, from three different orders. Bees were the main group of pollinators, thus some behavioural aspects were described. Th e period of highest foraging activity was between 7 and 10 am. Some species presented agonistic and monopolistic behaviour. Given the behaviour and...

Ultrastructural modifications in the venom glands of workers of Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) promoted by topical application of juvenile hormone Neotropical Entomology
Roat,Thaisa C.; Nocelli,Roberta C.F.; Cruz-Landim,Carminda da.
The present study analyzed, the influence of the treatment with juvenile hormone on the ultrastructure of Apis mellifera L. workers' venom glands. Newly emerged workers received topical application of 1 µl of juvenile hormone diluted in hexane, in the concentration of 2 µg/µl. Two controls were used; one control received no treatment (group C1) and other received topical application of 1 µl of hexane (group C2). The aspect of the glandular cells, in not treated newly emerged workers, showed that they are not yet secreting actively. Cellular modifications happened according to the worker age and to the glandular area considered. The most active phase of the gland happened from the emergence to the 14th day. At the 25th day the cells had already lost their...

Visitantes florais de Erythrina speciosa Andr. (Leguminosae) Zoologia
Vitali-Veiga,Maria J.; Machado,Vera L.L..
Inspite of Etythrina species exhibit morphologic attributes for adaptation to pollination by nectarivorous birds mentioned in the literature, E. speciosa is pollinated by lots of bees (Apinae and Meliponinae) which show a great urban occurrence. Systems of E. speciosa floral reproduction, fenology, diversity, frequency and constancy of insects visiting at different hours and flowering periods were studied. E. speciosa is Biocompatible, but xenogamy is the predominant system of reproduction. A large diversity of insects visiting the inflorescences was observed, with predominance of bees. The bee species showed a higher frequency: Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758 (45,0 %), Trigona spinipes (Fabricius, 1793) (28,6%), Trigona hyalinata (Lepeletier, 1836) (12,2 %)...

Visitantes florais de Lagerstroemia speciosa Pers: (Lythraceae) Zoologia
Vitali-Veiga,Maria de Jesus; Dutra,João Cloves Stanzani; Machado,Vera Lígia Letízio.
Studies were carried out with Lagerstroemia speciosa Pers. on floral reproductive systems, diversity and constancy of visiting insects at different hours of day, the behaviour of these insects at the flowers and the influence of these environmental factors in relation to their visits. The fenology, anthesis and others particularity of this vegetal species was studied. A great diversity of insects was verified visiting the flowers with the predominance of bees. The most frequent and constant species encountered were: Nannotrigona testaceicornis (Lepeletier, 1836) (40,2%), Tetragonisca angustula (Latreille, 1811) (16,9%), Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758 (11,8%), Plebeia droryana (Friese, 1900) (9,1 %) e Exomalopsis fulvofasciata (Smith, 1879) (8,5%).
